Salix had a reasonably strong batting line-up and MWCC can be pleased with limiting them to 230-8 off 40 overs. The pick of the bowlers were the Cat (1-19 off 8) and Sotheby who fizzed out three of the Salix middle order. Had the Cat not have had to leave the field of play with a pulled muscle in her back, there seems little doubt that Salix would not have even made 230. The Chairman was unable to move his head due to a sore neck and MWCC were effectively therefore down to 9 players. Mention should also be made of the catch of the day, Tjazzy taking a stunning overhead catch off Sothers's bowling to dismiss the dangerous Dyson.

The Wanderers run chase was laudable but just fell away at the end, neither Maggie nor Kells being in a position to bat although the Chairman bravely occupied the crease in a vain attempt to seize victory. The bulk of the runs came from Tjazzy (a gorgeous, aggressive 47), Jonny Mortimer's 19 (you know what you're going to get from Jonny M. with the bat - fluent pulls and cuts and aggressive running), BYU's 43 which was to many a 'Man of the Match' innings and your correspondent's sloggy 62 until holing out to deep mid-off off the bowling of SuperFletch. Special mention should made of BYU's innings I feel. Building totals has more to do with partnerships than individual scores and Bob's knock was the one that held the whole innings together.

So defeat, then, but absolutely no disgrace. It sounds as though we'll play Salix at HQ next year - bring 'em on!

EDITOR'S NOTE: To save our correspondent's modesty, it must be added that Lars's superb, beligerent knock took us closer to victory than had seemed at all possible, with Salix required at the end to put everyone on the boundary to check the Gilchrist-like onslaught.
